Dominio do Bibei is one of the leading wineries in the Spanish wine region of Ribeira Sacra in Galicia. The project began in the mid-nineties, when entrepreneur Javier Domínguez started purchasing abandoned vineyards and terraces in the remote Bibei valley. His goal was not only to produce quality wine, but also to breathe new life into a piece of the region's historic wine landscape.
The winery was officially established in 2001 and released its first wines with the 2002 vintage. From the start, the focus was on the restoration of old vineyards, the preservation of indigenous grape varieties, and a respectful approach to the landscape. The steep slopes of Ribeira Sacra often make mechanical cultivation impossible, meaning much of the work is still done by hand. This form of viticulture is often described in the region as "heroic viticulture." The winery itself was also designed with respect for nature. By using gravity instead of pumps, the grapes and must can be processed as gently as possible. In addition, the estate opts for sustainable farming methods and minimal intervention in the cellar, allowing the character of the vineyards to be optimally expressed.
Today, Dominio do Bibei is considered one of the pioneers of the quality revolution in Ribeira Sacra. With wines such as Lalama, Lacima, and Lapola, the estate has gained international recognition and helped prove that the ancient terraces of Galicia can produce world-class wines. The history of Dominio do Bibei is therefore not just the story of a winery, but also that of the revival of an age-old wine culture in one of the most spectacular wine landscapes in Spain.
