Castiglion Del Bosco

Castiglion del Bosco, situated in the Tuscan countryside near Montalcino, boasts a history that dates back more than 2,500 years. Etruscans lived here as early as 600 BC, followed by Roman and later Lombard settlements. Due to its hilltop location, the site held strategic importance from the beginning, which would later contribute to the construction of a fortified settlement.

In the Middle Ages, around the 12th century, the castle of Castiglion del Bosco was established. It grew into an important estate under the influence of noble families from Siena, such as the Cacciaconti and later the Gallerani. During this period, the estate gained not only military and economic significance but also a cultural role, including religious art in the church of San Michele.

Like many Tuscan settlements, Castiglion del Bosco subsequently experienced a period of decline due to wars and depopulation. Nevertheless, the area was reoccupied in the early modern period and continued to function as an agricultural estate. For centuries, life here revolved primarily around farming, with viticulture and olive cultivation as the most important activities.

In the 20th century, the estate received a new impetus thanks to the rise of Brunello di Montalcino, a wine that gained worldwide recognition. Castiglion del Bosco played an important role in this as one of the founding members of the wine consortium in 1967.

A major turning point came in 2003, when the estate was purchased and thoroughly restored by Massimo and Chiara Ferragamo. Since then, Castiglion del Bosco has developed into an exclusive resort with a renowned winery and a golf club, located in the UNESCO-protected Val d’Orcia. Today, the estate combines its rich historical heritage with modern luxury and international appeal.
