Ruinart

The founder of Ruinart is the Benedictine monk Dom Thierry Ruinart; he was the right-hand man of the founder of sparkling champagne, Dom Pérignon.

Ruinart was established in 1729, making it the oldest champagne house in the world. The house was founded immediately after Louis XV permitted the transport of wine in bottles in 1728. Previously, wine (and therefore champagne as well) could only be transported in barrels. As a result, champagne could not be taken to distant markets and was only consumed in the vicinity of the estate.

The first delivery of Ruinart champagne was dispatched in January 1730. Initially, Ruinart champagne was intended as a corporate gift. Dom Ruinart’s brother was a clothing merchant. However, six years later, the activities in the clothing business were ceased. Due to its success, Ruinart shifted its focus entirely to the sale of champagne.

The company remained in the hands of the Ruinart family until after the Second World War. When Bertrand Mure became director of Ruinart in 1949, he decided to enter into an agreement with Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the owner of the famous Château Mouton-Rothschild. The Rothschilds acquired half of the house's shares.

Between 1949 and 1963, Ruinart Champagne's revenue quadrupled. Because the champagne house had a greater need for investment and Rothschild did not consider it desirable to invest further, he sold his shares. In 1963, Moët & Chandon became 80% owner of Ruinart.

Today, the house that produces Ruinart champagne is owned by the holding company LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy), which also owns Veuve Clicquot, among others.

Like other champagne houses, Ruinart has its own unique style, which is characterized by the use of Chardonnay. Ruinart is a "Chardonnay house."

The house is based in Reims. This makes it special that Ruinart is a Chardonnay house, as the emphasis in this region is primarily on the processing of Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims. The use of a high proportion of Chardonnay is more commonly applied by champagne houses from Épernay, where grapes are harvested from the Côte des Blancs.

Ruinart's champagne bottles are stored in large, quiet limestone quarries beneath Reims. In these so-called "crayères," the temperature remains constant in both summer and winter. These quarries, where hundreds of thousands of bottles are left to mature, are a recognized cultural heritage site.
