Domaine La Bastide Saint Dominique is a family estate in the southern Rhône that has its roots in a long agricultural tradition, but is relatively young as a wine estate. The story begins in 1976, when the Bonnet family acquired farmland near Courthézon, a village between Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Orange. Initially, the grapes were sold to cooperatives, as was common in the region.
The real turning point came in the 1990s, when Eric Bonnet decided to completely change course. In 1999, he began bottling his own wines and officially established the estate as we know it today. His ambition is clear: to craft terroir-driven wines that reflect the identity of the southern Rhône, with respect for nature and tradition.
The estate possesses vineyards spread across various appellations, including Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, and Côtes du Rhône. This distribution gives the estate access to a rich variety of soils, from the famous galets roulés in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to limestone and clay soils elsewhere in the region.
From the start, Eric Bonnet chose a sustainable approach in the vineyard. The estate gradually transitioned to organic farming and was ultimately certified. Low yields, manual harvesting, and minimal intervention in the cellar are central. In vinification, the emphasis is on balance: ripe fruit, spice, and finesse, without over-extraction or overly dominant wood influences.
Today, Domaine La Bastide Saint Dominique is known as a reliable producer of classic Rhône wines with modern precision. It is a textbook example of how a relatively young estate, built on family tradition and a clear vision, can work its way up to become a respected name in the region.
