Château Phélan Ségur has a remarkable story that begins at the start of the 19th century. The origin of the estate lies with Bernard Phélan, an Irish wine merchant who settled in Bordeaux. In 1805, he purchased the Clos de Garamey estate and added the neighboring Ségur de Cabanac estate a few years later. By bringing these two properties together, he laid the foundation for what would later become Château Phélan Ségur.
After his passing, his son Frank Phélan took over the estate. Under his leadership, the château's reputation grew significantly. Frank was not only a respected winemaker, but also served as the mayor of Saint-Estèphe for many years. During this period, the impressive château that still defines the face of the estate today was built.
Throughout the 20th century, the estate changed hands a few times, but it consistently continued to invest in quality and prestige. A major milestone occurred in 1985, when the Gardinier family acquired the château. Thanks to the modernization of the vineyards and wine cellars, Phélan Ségur grew into one of the most highly regarded non-classified estates in the Médoc.
Since 2017, it has been owned by the Belgian entrepreneur Philippe Van de Vyvere. Under his leadership, the house continues to build on its reputation, with deep respect for tradition and terroir. Today, the estate comprises approximately 70 hectares of vineyards, beautifully situated on the banks of the Gironde. The wines are known for their typical Saint-Estèphe character: powerful and structured, yet refined and elegant at the same time.
