Teso La Monja is owned by the Eguren family, who also own the top Rioja estate Sierra Cantabria. In the late nineties, they came to Toro with the goal of producing wine with ‘power,’ like most wines in this DO, but with more refinement and elegance. Initially, Teso La Monja was part of the group that owned the well-known Toro winery, Numanthia. However, this estate was sold to the group behind Moët & Chandon, and in 2007 they started Teso La Monja. The company covers 160 hectares, 100 of which consist of old vines.
Teso La Monja focuses exclusively on producing top-tier wines, just as they learned to do at Numanthia. The old pre-phylloxera vines found here and the composition of the soil make a significant contribution to this. Ferruginous sandy soil, calcareous clay, and gravel are the primary soil types. This soil effectively retains the minimal water that falls here (only in winter), so the grapes usually have enough water during the hot, dry summers. While irrigation is permitted in the Toro DO, they do not make use of it here. One advantage of the drought is that very few diseases occur in the vineyard, meaning pesticides are almost never necessary. They work partly organically and biodynamically, though without certification.
Teso La Monja has since established itself as one of the premier estates of Toro with a beautiful, distinctive style.
