This winery dates back to 1924, when Josep Mata Capellades, pickaxe in hand, began building the cellars where some of Spain’s longest-aged sparkling wines rest today.
At the beginning of 2019, Recaredo left the DO Cava, along with other Penedès sparkling wine producers who are members of Corpinnat. The Corpinnat brand was presented in April 2018 as a new, EU-registered private certification that defends the terroir of Penedès, with stricter quality standards than those of the DO Cava.
Recaredo is unique. Its sparkling wines are all Brut Nature (the driest style) and are aged with natural cork stoppers. Each bottle is disgorged by hand, and because the bottle necks are not frozen, the disgorgement process is certainly worth watching!
The third generation is currently at the helm. Their 50 hectares of vineyards, planted on dry soil, are located in Alt Penedès and are managed according to organic and biodynamic practices, certified by Demeter. The wine from old Xarel.lo vines is barrel-aged, but the Recaredo style is decidedly no-nonsense. The wines are dry, austere, with striking acidity and often complex herbal aromas. The wines are primarily based on Xarel.lo and, to a lesser extent, Macabeo.
Recaredo’s most ambitious sparkling wine is Turó d’en Mota. It is made from Xarel.lo from a single vineyard and aged for more than 100 months. 1999 was the first vintage, and production barely reaches 3,000 bottles annually.
Recaredo’s commitment to organic farming has also led to a range of still white wines under the name Can Credo.
