Matsu Winery

Matsu is a relatively young wine project from the Spanish region of Toro, but with a strong focus on tradition and respect for nature. The project was launched in 2007 by Vintae, with the goal of showcasing the pure expression of old vines in Toro.

The name “Matsu” means “to wait” in Japanese, a reference to patience, respect, and the natural rhythm of the vineyard. From the beginning, they consciously chose sustainable and largely biodynamic viticulture, with minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the cellar. The grapes primarily come from very old Tinta de Toro vines (a local variant of Tempranillo), some over 100 years old.

What makes Matsu special is the philosophy behind its three best-known wines: El Pícaro, El Recio, and El Viejo. Each represents a stage of life—youth, maturity, and old age—and that concept is also reflected on the labels, which feature portraits of three generations of winemakers.

Since its founding, Matsu has rapidly developed into an internationally acclaimed brand. It combines a modern vision with centuries-old vineyards and traditional techniques, resulting in powerful, characterful wines that are typical of Toro, yet remain accessible to a wide audience.
